Professional Development: Academic Writing for Publication

This practical, hands-on workshop is designed to provide the facts needed to succeed and enjoy writing for publication. Presenter Ken Henson, a Fulbright scholar and a National Science Foundation scholar, has written or coauthored more than 300 national publications. His 50-plus books include five on writing for publication and two Phi Delta Kappa monographs on this topic. Learn to select good topics and appropriate journals and to design titles to hook editors and readers. Benefit from two decades of research on editors' likes and dislikes and their most common reasons for rejecting manuscripts. Explore strategies to increase your acceptance rate.

In this workshop, you will learn how to

  • identify topics,
  • select a journal,
  • write effective titles,
  • develop an effective writing style,
  • organize articles,
  • write query and cover letters,
  • design and use questionnaires,
  • use journals as blueprints,
  • base articles on dissertations and theses,
  • avoid the errors that lead to rejection.

Presented on Tuesday, May 21, from 9:00 a.m. to noon in Rockwell Hall 204.
