Workplace Violence Prevention

An incident of workplace violence could have lifelong consequences for employees and their families. Human Resources offers Workplace Violence/Domestic Violence Prevention Training for all employees. Sessions are conducted by Sam Lunetta, retired University Police lieutenant. Annual participation in this training is mandated for all public employees under New York State Labor Law Section 27-b.

Topics covered include: recognizing warning signs for potential violence, assessing risk in various work settings, what to do and not do if presented with a violent situation, and campus resources available to prevent violence.

A one hour session will be held in Cleveland Hall 418 from 10 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 27. Visit the HR website or call ext. 4822 to register.

This mandated training is also available online for those unable to attend the group sessions. Employees may access the program on ANGEL. (Go to: Campus Group Section, select “Workplace Violence Prevention Group.”)
For employees who completed the Workplace Violence Prevention Training last year, an online Refresher Course is also available on ANGEL.

SPF 366 Cultural Proficiency and Public Achievement. Prerequisite: SOC 100. Public achievement used as framework for analyzing diverse student perspectives, opinions, and assets to identify and meet the needs of different cultural groups, thereby helping empower students to become advocates for social justice. Service-learning course.

Course Revision:
MAT 270 Discrete Mathematics. Prerequisite: Four years of high school mathematics or equivalent. Fundamental principles used in discrete mathematics. Topics include logic, mathematical induction, sets, relations, functions, permutations, combinations, recursion, and graph theory.

We encourage departments to complete any revisions requested by the CSCC for proposals that have been “accepted pending revisions” so that they may be finalized for approval and forwarded to the Academic and Student Affairs Office.

Buffalo State College will participate in the J. P. Morgan Chase Corporate Challenge on Thursday, June 7, at 6:45 p.m. in Delaware Park. All faculty and staff are invited to run, walk, or just hang out in the hospitality tent, but everyone must register to participate. This year’s Corporate Challenge proceeds go directly to the American Red Cross of Western New York. With your registration fee, you receive entrance to the Corporate Challenge, a J. P. Morgan Chase commemorative T-shirt, a virtual goodie bag, a Buffalo State College team T-shirt, and free food and drinks all evening at the hospitality tent. Register online at the J. P. 'Restoring Dignity through the Arts' at the Burchfield Penney Art Center

'Restoring Dignity through the Arts' at the Burchfield Penney Art Center

Individuals recovering from mental illness or substance abuse will share their journeys through artwork in a special exhibit titled Restoring Dignity through the Arts, on view Saturday, May 19, from noon to 5:00 p.m. in the Burchfield Penney Art Center.

Through painting, sculpture, weaving, photography, poetry, music, and video, artists 18 and older will illustrate the need for acceptance, dignity, and social inclusion for people in recovery. Both Native and non-Native artists from Western New York and Southern Ontario will contribute to the exhibit. A panel of judges will select works for an exhibit to tour various locations in Western New York. The artworks will also be displayed at www.wnyil.org and www.wnyil.org/oahiio. Other activities scheduled to take place during the exhibit include a wellness fair, a cultural diversity performance, and an exhibit of posters chosen to promote Restoring Dignity through the Arts activities and related exhibits. The show is jointly sponsored by Western New York Independent Living Inc., OAHIIO, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), and the Exceptional Education Department and School of Education at Buffalo State College.

Underground Utilities Project: Temporary Road and Parking Lot Closures

To facilitate the underground utilities rehabilitation project currently under way, campus traffic and parking will be affected as follows:

East End Closure of Iroquois Drive, May 18–20
Beginning at 6:00 a.m. Friday, May 18, the eastern portion of Iroquois Drive will be closed to traffic. The closure is scheduled to remain in place until 6:00 p.m. Sunday, May 20. A “Road Closed” barricade will be placed on Iroquois Drive at Elmwood Avenue, preventing traffic from entering Iroquois Drive from Elmwood Avenue. There will be no access to Lot X or Campus House parking during this period.

For those entering Iroquois Drive from Grant Street, digital signs placed near the Scajaquada Towers will notify motorists of the closure. While no traffic will be permitted to pass through to Elmwood Avenue, access to parking lots T, U, and W will remain open for those entering Iroquois Drive from Grant Street.

Temporary Closure of Lot B Begins Week of May 21
Lot B will close during the week of Monday, May 21. The lot is scheduled to reopen in early July.

Camp UpRising for Curious, Imaginative, and Adventurous Children Ages 10–18

The Buffalo State College International Center for Studies in Creativity will present Camp UpRising, a full-day camp for curious, imaginative, and adventurous children ages 10–18, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. August 6–10. The cost is $200. Lunch is included.

Campers will learn through experiential learning methods and will work on individual and group projects in a fun and creative environment. All staff will be trained experts from the creative studies program.

Camp objectives include discovering and driving creative thinking for the twenty-first century by answering the following questions:

In what ways am I creative?
What are all the ways in which people are creative?
How might we use our unique creative strengths when we collaborate?
How might we use tools and techniques to empower our creativity?
What might be all the attitudes that embrace creativity?
How might we use our creativity on demand to make a difference?

Unneeded property should not be left in the hallway or on the loading dock. When property is no longer needed, please send an original surplus form to Business Services.

The form must be signed by the department chair or director or it will be returned. When the completed form is received, a work order will be placed for the removal of the property.

July 27, 2012: All reports (deans, associate vice presidents, vice presidents) to provost (submitted electronically to Carolyn Martino.

Classroom Building Stairwell Project Begins May 14

Flooring and stair treads in the Classroom Building stairwells will be replaced during a project that will begin Monday, May 14, and extend to approximately mid-July. Floors and treads in all four stairwells will be upgraded.

Up to two stairways may be closed at one time, making it necessary for building users to seek alternative access routes. Work will begin in the A-west stairway, followed by the B, A-east, and C stairways. In addition, the fourth floor of the Classroom Building will be inaccessible for the duration of the project.

Call for Submissions: 13th Annual Faculty and Staff Research and Creativity Fall Forum, October 25

The 13th annual Faculty and Staff Research and Creativity Fall Forum will be held on Thursday, October 25, in the Sports Arena.* The goal of the forum is to develop, encourage, and support Buffalo State faculty and staff research and creativity, and to make collaborative research endeavors and grantsmanship more accessible. This is an excellent opportunity to network with other Buffalo State faculty and staff members and to identify common scholarly and creative interests you may have.

All faculty and staff members are invited to organize an exhibit to present current research, creative activities, or other scholarship. Individual, departmental, or group exhibits are welcome. President Podolefsky declared the 2012–2013 academic year as the Year of the City, highlighting the unique fact that Buffalo State is the only SUNY four-year comprehensive institution located in a city. This theme is an opportunity to celebrate our mission as an institution that serves the city, while bringing greater public recognition to Buffalo State’s wide-ranging educational programs and research with urban emphases, as well as the university’s extensive community engagement initiatives.

If your submission relates to or supports the Year of the City theme, please include it in the box on the submission form so that we may highlight it in the program.

To participate, please complete the online form. Titles and abstracts are to be submitted electronically by Monday, September 24.

*Please note: Because of construction in the Houston Gym, the Fall Forum will be held in the upper level of the Sports Arena this year. A limited number of tables and chairs will be available because of the location change.
