Responses to Senate Recommendations: General Freshman Admission Policy and Amendment to DOPS Change of Grade Policy

At its February 14, 2014, meeting, the College Senate voted to recommend to the president a review of the SUNY Buffalo State General Freshman Admission Policy as outlined in the resolution below:

Review of the SUNY Buffalo State General Freshman Admission Policy
Presented at the December 2013 College Senate meeting by the Standards for Student Committee

WHEREAS, the current admissions policy (approved in 1992) calls for a five-year review cycle and no evidence of review has been found; and

WHEREAS, the current admissions policy states that “the number of special admission students admitted to the college shall be a maximum of 10 percent of the general freshman class,”

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the general freshman admissions policy be reviewed during the spring 2014 semester, with current college practice (e.g., use of standardized test scores, a maximum of 10 percent of the general freshman class being admitted through special admissions process/standards) being maintained until the policy review is completed. This review should happen with collaboration between an ad hoc Enrollment Management Advisory Committee and the Standards for Students Committee, with a report presented to the College Senate upon completion.

I hereby accept the recommendation of the College Senate and authorize the Senate to conduct the review of the General Freshman Admission Policy based on the criteria in its recommendation. I also charge the Senate with the responsibility of providing me with the final report of the review committee at the end of this process.

Proposed Amendment to DOPS Change of Grade Policy
At its February 14, 2014, meeting, the College Senate also voted to forward recommendations to the president for revisions to the DOPS Change of Grade Policy as indicated below:

Proposed Amendment to DOPS I:16:07 Change of Grade Policy
From the Instruction and Research Committee for vote at the February 14, 2014, Senate meeting:

Proposed amendment (indicated below in BOLDFACE TYPE ALL CAPS)

Policy Number: I:16:07 Date: Updated February 2009
Subject: Change of Grade Policy

Grades submitted at the end of the semester are considered final. In case of a clerical error or other extenuating circumstance resulting in an incorrect grade, a request for a grade change must be submitted by the instructor, with full written justification, to the appropriate associate dean. IN THE EVENT THAT THE ORIGINAL INSTRUCTOR IS INCAPACITATED OR OTHERWISE UNAVAILABLE, A CHANGE OF GRADE MAY BE SUBMITTED BY THE DEPARTMENT CHAIR. The appropriate associate dean must approve all grade changes and forward the grade change form to the Registrar’s Office. This policy applies to both undergraduate and graduate students.

I hereby accept the College Senate’s recommendation on revisions to the DOPS Change of Grade Policy. I charge the provost with the responsibility of overseeing the implementation of the policy revision to be effective in the spring 2014 semest
